How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.4 × 100 = 40%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 40% of 100 is 0.4 × 100 = 40.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = p/100, so p = 40 × 100 ÷ 100 = 40%. Both methods always give the same answer.
