How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 22 ÷ 10 = 2.2
  2. Multiply by 100: 2.2 × 100 = 220%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 220% of 10 is 2.2 × 10 = 22.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 22/10 = p/100, so p = 22 × 100 ÷ 10 = 220%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =22/10*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

Turning it around
