How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 23 ÷ 20 = 1.15
  2. Multiply by 100: 1.15 × 100 = 115%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 115% of 20 is 1.15 × 20 = 23.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/20 = p/100, so p = 23 × 100 ÷ 20 = 115%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =23/20*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

23 is more than the whole amount (1.15 times as much) of 20. 23 goes past 20 by 3, which is another 15% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 23 items against a target of 20 means reaching 115% of the target, beating it by 15%.

Turning it around

If you know that 23 is 115% of a number, you can get that number back: 23 ÷ 1.15 = 20. And 20 as a percentage of 23 is 86.9565%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
