How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.2 × 100 = 20%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20% of 100 is 0.2 × 100 = 20.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = p/100, so p = 20 × 100 ÷ 100 = 20%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

20 is between a tenth and a quarter of 100. The part that is left, 80, is the other 80%.

Test scores: 20 correct answers out of 100 is a score of 20%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.

Turning it around

If you know that 20 is 20% of a number, you can get that number back: 20 ÷ 0.2 = 100. And 100 as a percentage of 20 is 500%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
