How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.03 × 100 = 3%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3% of 100 is 0.03 × 100 = 3.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = p/100, so p = 3 × 100 ÷ 100 = 3%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

3 is less than a tenth of 100. The part that is left, 97, is the other 97%.

Test scores: 3 correct answers out of 100 is a score of 3%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.

Turning it around

If you know that 3 is 3% of a number, you can get that number back: 3 ÷ 0.03 = 100. And 100 as a percentage of 3 is 3,333.3333%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
