How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.41 × 100 = 41%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 41% of 100 is 0.41 × 100 = 41.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = p/100, so p = 41 × 100 ÷ 100 = 41%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

41 is between a quarter and a half of 100. The part that is left, 59, is the other 59%.

Test scores: 41 correct answers out of 100 is a score of 41%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.
