How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 45 ÷ 9 = 5
- Multiply by 100: 5 × 100 = 500%
- Check: Work backwards: 500% of 9 is 5 × 9 = 45.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/9 = p/100, so p = 45 × 100 ÷ 9 = 500%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =45/9*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
45 is more than the whole amount (5 times as much) of 9. 45 goes past 9 by 36, which is another 400% on top of the whole.
Targets: selling 45 items against a target of 9 means reaching 500% of the target, beating it by 400%.

If you know that 45 is 500% of a number, you can get that number back: 45 ÷ 5 = 9. And 9 as a percentage of 45 is 20%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
