How to work it out
- Divide the part by the whole: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
- Multiply by 100: 0.51 × 100 = 51%
- Check: Work backwards: 51% of 100 is 0.51 × 100 = 51.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = p/100, so p = 51 × 100 ÷ 100 = 51%. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =51/100*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.
What the result means
51 is more than half but less than three quarters of 100. The part that is left, 49, is the other 49%.
Test scores: 51 correct answers out of 100 is a score of 51%, which on a common US grading scale is an F.
Turning it around
If you know that 51 is 51% of a number, you can get that number back: 51 ÷ 0.51 = 100. And 100 as a percentage of 51 is 196.0784%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
