How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 7 ÷ 10 = 0.7
  2. Multiply by 100: 0.7 × 100 = 70%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 70% of 10 is 0.7 × 10 = 7.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/10 = p/100, so p = 7 × 100 ÷ 10 = 70%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7/10*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

7 is more than half but less than three quarters of 10. The part that is left, 3, is the other 30%.

Test scores: 7 correct answers out of 10 is a score of 70%, which on a common US grading scale is a C.

Turning it around

If you know that 7 is 70% of a number, you can get that number back: 7 ÷ 0.7 = 10. And 10 as a percentage of 7 is 142.8571%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
