How the answer is worked out

A quicker way

Find 1% of 10 first: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1. Then count how many of those fit into 9: 9 ÷ 0.1 = 90.

Because 10 × 10 = 100, multiply both numbers by 10: 9 × 10 = 90, so the answer is 90% with no division needed.

Rounded to a whole number the percentage is 90, to one decimal place 90.0 and to two decimal places 90.00. Round only at the end: rounding halfway through a calculation can change the last digit.

The formula explained

percentage = part ÷ whole × 100. The part is the number you are asking about and the whole is the number after “of”. Dividing gives the fraction of the whole, and multiplying by 100 turns that fraction into a number out of 100.
