How to work it out

  1. Divide the part by the whole: 8 ÷ 2 = 4
  2. Multiply by 100: 4 × 100 = 400%
  3. Check: Work backwards: 400% of 2 is 4 × 2 = 8.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/2 = p/100, so p = 8 × 100 ÷ 2 = 400%. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =8/2*100. Dividing the wrong way round (whole ÷ part) gives a different answer. The number after “of” is always the whole, so it goes on the bottom.

What the result means

8 is more than the whole amount (4 times as much) of 2. 8 goes past 2 by 6, which is another 300% on top of the whole.

Targets: selling 8 items against a target of 2 means reaching 400% of the target, beating it by 300%.

Turning it around

If you know that 8 is 400% of a number, you can get that number back: 8 ÷ 4 = 2. And 2 as a percentage of 8 is 25%, a different answer, because the whole has changed.
