How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 52 = 0.52
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.52 ÷ 52 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/52, so part = 1 × 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*52. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.52 is the 1% share of 52. The remaining 99% is 51.48, and the two parts add back up to 52.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $52 saves $0.52, so you pay $51.48.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 52 by 1% gives 52.52 and decreasing it by 1% gives 51.48. These do not cancel out: raising 52 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 51.9948, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
