How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 80 = 48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 48 ÷ 80 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/80, so part = 60 × 80 ÷ 100 = 48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

48 is the 60% share of 80. The remaining 40% is 32, and the two parts add back up to 80.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $80 saves $48, so you pay $32.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 80 by 60% gives 128 and decreasing it by 60% gives 32. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 51.2, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
