How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 98 = 0.98
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.98 ÷ 98 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/98, so part = 1 × 98 ÷ 100 = 0.98. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*98. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.98 is the 1% share of 98. The remaining 99% is 97.02, and the two parts add back up to 98.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $98 saves $0.98, so you pay $97.02.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 98 by 1% gives 98.98 and decreasing it by 1% gives 97.02. These do not cancel out: raising 98 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 97.9902, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
