How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 55 = 44
  3. Check: Work backwards: 44 ÷ 55 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/55, so part = 80 × 55 ÷ 100 = 44. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

44 is the 80% share of 55. The remaining 20% is 11, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $55 saves $44, so you pay $11.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 55 by 80% gives 99 and decreasing it by 80% gives 11. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 19.8, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
