How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 68 = 6.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.8 ÷ 68 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/68, so part = 10 × 68 ÷ 100 = 6.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*68. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.8 is the 10% share of 68. The remaining 90% is 61.2, and the two parts add back up to 68.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $68 saves $6.8, so you pay $61.2.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 68 by 10% gives 74.8 and decreasing it by 10% gives 61.2. These do not cancel out: raising 68 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 67.32, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
