How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 60 = 42
  3. Check: Work backwards: 42 ÷ 60 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/60, so part = 70 × 60 ÷ 100 = 42. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

42 is the 70% share of 60. The remaining 30% is 18, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $60 saves $42, so you pay $18.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 60 by 70% gives 102 and decreasing it by 70% gives 18. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 30.6, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
