How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 18 = 2.16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.16 ÷ 18 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/18, so part = 12 × 18 ÷ 100 = 2.16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*18. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.16 is the 12% share of 18. The remaining 88% is 15.84, and the two parts add back up to 18.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $18 saves $2.16, so you pay $15.84.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 18 by 12% gives 20.16 and decreasing it by 12% gives 15.84. These do not cancel out: raising 18 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 17.7408, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
