How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 85 = 34
  3. Check: Work backwards: 34 ÷ 85 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/85, so part = 40 × 85 ÷ 100 = 34. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*85. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

34 is the 40% share of 85. The remaining 60% is 51, and the two parts add back up to 85.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $85 saves $34, so you pay $51.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 85 by 40% gives 119 and decreasing it by 40% gives 51. These do not cancel out: raising 85 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 71.4, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
