How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 12 ÷ 100 = 0.12
  2. Multiply: 0.12 × 28 = 3.36
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.36 ÷ 28 × 100 = 12%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 12/100 = part/28, so part = 12 × 28 ÷ 100 = 3.36. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =12%*28. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.36 is the 12% share of 28. The remaining 88% is 24.64, and the two parts add back up to 28.

Discounts: 12% off an item priced $28 saves $3.36, so you pay $24.64.

Adding and taking away 12%

Increasing 28 by 12% gives 31.36 and decreasing it by 12% gives 24.64. These do not cancel out: raising 28 by 12% and then lowering the result by 12% ends at 27.5968, because the second 12% is taken of a bigger number.
