How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 50 = 20
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20 ÷ 50 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/50, so part = 40 × 50 ÷ 100 = 20. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

20 is the 40% share of 50. The remaining 60% is 30, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $50 saves $20, so you pay $30.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 50 by 40% gives 70 and decreasing it by 40% gives 30. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 42, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
