How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 12 = 1.56
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.56 ÷ 12 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/12, so part = 13 × 12 ÷ 100 = 1.56. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.56 is the 13% share of 12. The remaining 87% is 10.44, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $12 saves $1.56, so you pay $10.44.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 12 by 13% gives 13.56 and decreasing it by 13% gives 10.44. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 11.7972, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
