How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 30 = 3
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3 ÷ 30 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/30, so part = 10 × 30 ÷ 100 = 3. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3 is the 10% share of 30. The remaining 90% is 27, and the two parts add back up to 30.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $30 saves $3, so you pay $27.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 30 by 10% gives 33 and decreasing it by 10% gives 27. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 29.7, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 30% of 10. 10% of 30 and 30% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 30 ÷ 100 = 3), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
