How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 13 = 2.73
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.73 ÷ 13 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/13, so part = 21 × 13 ÷ 100 = 2.73. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.73 is the 21% share of 13. The remaining 79% is 10.27, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $13 saves $2.73, so you pay $10.27.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 13 by 21% gives 15.73 and decreasing it by 21% gives 10.27. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 12.4267, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
