How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 21 ÷ 100 = 0.21
  2. Multiply: 0.21 × 82 = 17.22
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.22 ÷ 82 × 100 = 21%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 21/100 = part/82, so part = 21 × 82 ÷ 100 = 17.22. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =21%*82. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.22 is the 21% share of 82. The remaining 79% is 64.78, and the two parts add back up to 82.

Discounts: 21% off an item priced $82 saves $17.22, so you pay $64.78.

Adding and taking away 21%

Increasing 82 by 21% gives 99.22 and decreasing it by 21% gives 64.78. These do not cancel out: raising 82 by 21% and then lowering the result by 21% ends at 78.3838, because the second 21% is taken of a bigger number.
