How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
- Multiply: 0.25 × 25 = 6.25
- Check: Work backwards: 6.25 ÷ 25 × 100 = 25%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/25, so part = 25 × 25 ÷ 100 = 6.25. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =25%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
6.25 is the 25% share of 25. The remaining 75% is 18.75, and the two parts add back up to 25.
Discounts: 25% off an item priced $25 saves $6.25, so you pay $18.75.
Adding and taking away 25%
Increasing 25 by 25% gives 31.25 and decreasing it by 25% gives 18.75. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 23.4375, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
