How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
- Multiply: 0.23 × 13 = 2.99
- Check: Work backwards: 2.99 ÷ 13 × 100 = 23%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/13, so part = 23 × 13 ÷ 100 = 2.99. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =23%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
2.99 is the 23% share of 13. The remaining 77% is 10.01, and the two parts add back up to 13.
Discounts: 23% off an item priced $13 saves $2.99, so you pay $10.01.
Adding and taking away 23%
Increasing 13 by 23% gives 15.99 and decreasing it by 23% gives 10.01. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 12.3123, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
