How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 300 = 120
  3. Check: Work backwards: 120 ÷ 300 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/300, so part = 40 × 300 ÷ 100 = 120. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*300. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

120 is the 40% share of 300. The remaining 60% is 180, and the two parts add back up to 300.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $300 saves $120, so you pay $180.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 300 by 40% gives 420 and decreasing it by 40% gives 180. These do not cancel out: raising 300 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 252, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 300% of 40. 40% of 300 and 300% of 40 are always equal (both are 40 × 300 ÷ 100 = 120), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
