How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 23 ÷ 100 = 0.23
- Multiply: 0.23 × 18 = 4.14
- Check: Work backwards: 4.14 ÷ 18 × 100 = 23%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 23/100 = part/18, so part = 23 × 18 ÷ 100 = 4.14. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =23%*18. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
4.14 is the 23% share of 18. The remaining 77% is 13.86, and the two parts add back up to 18.
Discounts: 23% off an item priced $18 saves $4.14, so you pay $13.86.
Adding and taking away 23%
Increasing 18 by 23% gives 22.14 and decreasing it by 23% gives 13.86. These do not cancel out: raising 18 by 23% and then lowering the result by 23% ends at 17.0478, because the second 23% is taken of a bigger number.
