How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply: 0.18 × 23 = 4.14
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.14 ÷ 23 × 100 = 18%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 18/100 = part/23, so part = 18 × 23 ÷ 100 = 4.14. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =18%*23. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.14 is the 18% share of 23. The remaining 82% is 18.86, and the two parts add back up to 23.

Discounts: 18% off an item priced $23 saves $4.14, so you pay $18.86.

Adding and taking away 18%

Increasing 23 by 18% gives 27.14 and decreasing it by 18% gives 18.86. These do not cancel out: raising 23 by 18% and then lowering the result by 18% ends at 22.2548, because the second 18% is taken of a bigger number.
