How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 27 ÷ 100 = 0.27
  2. Multiply: 0.27 × 6 = 1.62
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.62 ÷ 6 × 100 = 27%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 27/100 = part/6, so part = 27 × 6 ÷ 100 = 1.62. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =27%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.62 is the 27% share of 6. The remaining 73% is 4.38, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 27% off an item priced $6 saves $1.62, so you pay $4.38.

Adding and taking away 27%

Increasing 6 by 27% gives 7.62 and decreasing it by 27% gives 4.38. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 27% and then lowering the result by 27% ends at 5.5626, because the second 27% is taken of a bigger number.
