How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 28 ÷ 100 = 0.28
  2. Multiply: 0.28 × 23 = 6.44
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.44 ÷ 23 × 100 = 28%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 28/100 = part/23, so part = 28 × 23 ÷ 100 = 6.44. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =28%*23. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.44 is the 28% share of 23. The remaining 72% is 16.56, and the two parts add back up to 23.

Discounts: 28% off an item priced $23 saves $6.44, so you pay $16.56.

Adding and taking away 28%

Increasing 23 by 28% gives 29.44 and decreasing it by 28% gives 16.56. These do not cancel out: raising 23 by 28% and then lowering the result by 28% ends at 21.1968, because the second 28% is taken of a bigger number.
