How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 90 = 72
- Check: Work backwards: 72 ÷ 90 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/90, so part = 80 × 90 ÷ 100 = 72. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*90. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
72 is the 80% share of 90. The remaining 20% is 18, and the two parts add back up to 90.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $90 saves $72, so you pay $18.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 90 by 80% gives 162 and decreasing it by 80% gives 18. These do not cancel out: raising 90 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 32.4, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
