How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 95 = 2.85
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.85 ÷ 95 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/95, so part = 3 × 95 ÷ 100 = 2.85. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*95. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.85 is the 3% share of 95. The remaining 97% is 92.15, and the two parts add back up to 95.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $95 saves $2.85, so you pay $92.15.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 95 by 3% gives 97.85 and decreasing it by 3% gives 92.15. These do not cancel out: raising 95 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 94.9145, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
