How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 100 = 15
- Check: Work backwards: 15 ÷ 100 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/100, so part = 15 × 100 ÷ 100 = 15. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
15 is the 15% share of 100. The remaining 85% is 85, and the two parts add back up to 100.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $100 saves $15, so you pay $85.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 100 by 15% gives 115 and decreasing it by 15% gives 85. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 97.75, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 100% of 15. 15% of 100 and 100% of 15 are always equal (both are 15 × 100 ÷ 100 = 15), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
