How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 38 ÷ 100 = 0.38
  2. Multiply: 0.38 × 99 = 37.62
  3. Check: Work backwards: 37.62 ÷ 99 × 100 = 38%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 38/100 = part/99, so part = 38 × 99 ÷ 100 = 37.62. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =38%*99. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

37.62 is the 38% share of 99. The remaining 62% is 61.38, and the two parts add back up to 99.

Discounts: 38% off an item priced $99 saves $37.62, so you pay $61.38.

Adding and taking away 38%

Increasing 99 by 38% gives 136.62 and decreasing it by 38% gives 61.38. These do not cancel out: raising 99 by 38% and then lowering the result by 38% ends at 84.7044, because the second 38% is taken of a bigger number.
