How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Multiply: 0.4 × 60 = 24
- Check: Work backwards: 24 ÷ 60 × 100 = 40%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/60, so part = 40 × 60 ÷ 100 = 24. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
24 is the 40% share of 60. The remaining 60% is 36, and the two parts add back up to 60.
Discounts: 40% off an item priced $60 saves $24, so you pay $36.
Adding and taking away 40%
Increasing 60 by 40% gives 84 and decreasing it by 40% gives 36. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 50.4, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 60% of 40. 40% of 60 and 60% of 40 are always equal (both are 40 × 60 ÷ 100 = 24), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
