How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 8 = 0.32
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.32 ÷ 8 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/8, so part = 4 × 8 ÷ 100 = 0.32. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.32 is the 4% share of 8. The remaining 96% is 7.68, and the two parts add back up to 8.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $8 saves $0.32, so you pay $7.68.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 8 by 4% gives 8.32 and decreasing it by 4% gives 7.68. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 7.9872, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.
