How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
  2. Multiply: 0.2 × 70 = 14
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14 ÷ 70 × 100 = 20%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/70, so part = 20 × 70 ÷ 100 = 14. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =20%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14 is the 20% share of 70. The remaining 80% is 56, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 20% off an item priced $70 saves $14, so you pay $56.

Adding and taking away 20%

Increasing 70 by 20% gives 84 and decreasing it by 20% gives 56. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 67.2, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 70% of 20. 20% of 70 and 70% of 20 are always equal (both are 20 × 70 ÷ 100 = 14), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
