How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 82 = 36.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 36.9 ÷ 82 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/82, so part = 45 × 82 ÷ 100 = 36.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*82. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

36.9 is the 45% share of 82. The remaining 55% is 45.1, and the two parts add back up to 82.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $82 saves $36.9, so you pay $45.1.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 82 by 45% gives 118.9 and decreasing it by 45% gives 45.1. These do not cancel out: raising 82 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 65.395, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
