How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 60 = 6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/60, so part = 10 × 60 ÷ 100 = 6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6 is the 10% share of 60. The remaining 90% is 54, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $60 saves $6, so you pay $54.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 60 by 10% gives 66 and decreasing it by 10% gives 54. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 59.4, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
