How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 46 ÷ 100 = 0.46
- Multiply: 0.46 × 1 = 0.46
- Check: Work backwards: 0.46 ÷ 1 × 100 = 46%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 46/100 = part/1, so part = 46 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.46. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =46%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.46 is the 46% share of 1. The remaining 54% is 0.54, and the two parts add back up to 1.
Discounts: 46% off an item priced $1 saves $0.46, so you pay $0.54.
Adding and taking away 46%
Increasing 1 by 46% gives 1.46 and decreasing it by 46% gives 0.54. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 46% and then lowering the result by 46% ends at 0.7884, because the second 46% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 1% of 46. 46% of 1 and 1% of 46 are always equal (both are 46 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.46), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
