How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 25 = 17.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.5 ÷ 25 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/25, so part = 70 × 25 ÷ 100 = 17.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.5 is the 70% share of 25. The remaining 30% is 7.5, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $25 saves $17.5, so you pay $7.5.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 25 by 70% gives 42.5 and decreasing it by 70% gives 7.5. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 12.75, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
