How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
- Multiply: 0.06 × 24 = 1.44
- Check: Work backwards: 1.44 ÷ 24 × 100 = 6%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/24, so part = 6 × 24 ÷ 100 = 1.44. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =6%*24. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.44 is the 6% share of 24. The remaining 94% is 22.56, and the two parts add back up to 24.
Discounts: 6% off an item priced $24 saves $1.44, so you pay $22.56.
Adding and taking away 6%
Increasing 24 by 6% gives 25.44 and decreasing it by 6% gives 22.56. These do not cancel out: raising 24 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 23.9136, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
