How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
- Multiply: 0.06 × 32 = 1.92
- Check: Work backwards: 1.92 ÷ 32 × 100 = 6%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/32, so part = 6 × 32 ÷ 100 = 1.92. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =6%*32. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.92 is the 6% share of 32. The remaining 94% is 30.08, and the two parts add back up to 32.
Discounts: 6% off an item priced $32 saves $1.92, so you pay $30.08.
Adding and taking away 6%
Increasing 32 by 6% gives 33.92 and decreasing it by 6% gives 30.08. These do not cancel out: raising 32 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 31.8848, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
