How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
- Multiply: 0.75 × 30 = 22.5
- Check: Work backwards: 22.5 ÷ 30 × 100 = 75%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/30, so part = 75 × 30 ÷ 100 = 22.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =75%*30. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
22.5 is the 75% share of 30. The remaining 25% is 7.5, and the two parts add back up to 30.
Discounts: 75% off an item priced $30 saves $22.5, so you pay $7.5.
Adding and taking away 75%
Increasing 30 by 75% gives 52.5 and decreasing it by 75% gives 7.5. These do not cancel out: raising 30 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 13.125, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
