How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 63 = 37.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 37.8 ÷ 63 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/63, so part = 60 × 63 ÷ 100 = 37.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

37.8 is the 60% share of 63. The remaining 40% is 25.2, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $63 saves $37.8, so you pay $25.2.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 63 by 60% gives 100.8 and decreasing it by 60% gives 25.2. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 40.32, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
