How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 65 = 16.25
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16.25 ÷ 65 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/65, so part = 25 × 65 ÷ 100 = 16.25. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16.25 is the 25% share of 65. The remaining 75% is 48.75, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $65 saves $16.25, so you pay $48.75.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 65 by 25% gives 81.25 and decreasing it by 25% gives 48.75. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 60.9375, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
