How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 58 = 40.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 40.6 ÷ 58 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/58, so part = 70 × 58 ÷ 100 = 40.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*58. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

40.6 is the 70% share of 58. The remaining 30% is 17.4, and the two parts add back up to 58.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $58 saves $40.6, so you pay $17.4.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 58 by 70% gives 98.6 and decreasing it by 70% gives 17.4. These do not cancel out: raising 58 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 29.58, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
