How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Multiply: 0.4 × 65 = 26
- Check: Work backwards: 26 ÷ 65 × 100 = 40%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/65, so part = 40 × 65 ÷ 100 = 26. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
26 is the 40% share of 65. The remaining 60% is 39, and the two parts add back up to 65.
Discounts: 40% off an item priced $65 saves $26, so you pay $39.
Adding and taking away 40%
Increasing 65 by 40% gives 91 and decreasing it by 40% gives 39. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 54.6, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
